INDIANAPOLIS -- Following the most recent shooting of an IMPD officer, the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police is calling for an emergency $3.2 million expenditure to buy better equipment for police.

The FOP says it's seen a rise in the number of assaults against IMPD officers over the last three years. According to the group, more than half of IMPD's 1,600 officers are attacked each year by suspects.
The FOP also called on state lawmakers Tuesday to create a law enforcement protection act that would enhance criminal penalties for people who target police.
"I think we've got the perfect storm," said FOP President Rick Snyder. "They are better equipped than we’ve seen in our history. We're seeing many of the criminal element better equipped than our law enforcement professionals. That's what we're talking about here today."
Among the FOP's requests: external protective vests; Kevlar helmets; and more trauma kits for all officers.
Indianapolis City-County Council President Maggie Lewis said the request didn't surprise her.
"The council has been supportive of law enforcement and will continue to support law enforcement in their efforts," Lewis said.
The soonest the council could take up the FOP's request is Wednesday night.
