INDIANAPOLIS -- The last day of the Indiana State Fair brought record numbers of people to the fairgrounds, but they couldn't stop the 2016 season from lower overall attendance than last year.
Sunday's weather was one of the best of the season, with low humidity and highs in the 70s.
The nice weather brought 83,148 people to the fair, a new record for a Sunday.
Despite Sunday's high attendance numbers, fair attendance was down significantly from last year's numbers.
The 2016 fair saw 731,543 people in the 17 days the fair is open.
This year's number is 19.4 percent less than the 2015 fair, which was the fifth-most attended Indiana State Fair ever.
Fair officials blamed the low attendance this year on the weather, with many humid days and nine days of precipitation.
“The mission of the Indiana State Fair is to promote agriculture and connect farmers with consumers, and this Fair we got a glimpse of what a farmer can deal with during a season with less than favorable weather,” said Cindy Hoye, Executive Director of the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Event Center.
