Ind. universities educate about sexual assault

Colleges across Indiana are already reporting sexual assaults on or near campus this year. So what are schools doing to keep students safe?

Indiana University, Ball State, Purdue and Notre Dame are all investigating reports of sexual assaults and rapes this semester.

At IU, officials said they believe more victims are coming forward. Nevertheless, it remains an underreported crime on campus, with only an estimated 20 percent of victims coming forward.

To combat assault, universities are educating students about the importance of coming forward if they've been victimized.

At IU, the university has a website devoted to helping students who have been victimized. But experts say parents need to talk to their children about the issue long before they enter college.
