INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Department of Public Works announced the plan Monday for the final phase of a long-awaited north side floodwall project.
The first part of the Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction Project was built between September 2002 and July 2004 in the Warfleigh neighborhood. The project involves the construction of a floodwall and earthen levee along the east bank of the White River and the canal.
The final portion of the floodwall has been pending a decision for years as residents along Westfield Boulevard and DPW employees went back and forth over the details.
On Monday, DPW announced it had selected the "Westfield Alignment" for the final portion of the project. That design will travel along Westfield Boulevard beginning at Capitol Avenue and terminating between the far-western side of Butler University's campus and the canal.
DPW said the project will remove more than 2,000 structures from the 100-year floodplain.
