INDIANAPOLIS -- More than 130 Indiana high schools were honored Monday for their success in providing dual college credit courses for their students.
Dual credit allows high school students to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously.
The Indiana Department of Education, Vincennes University, and Ivy Tech Community College held the recognition ceremony at the statehouse.
Ben Davis University High School, an early college high school in the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township, was one of six schools in the state awarded "gold" status for having 75-100 percent of its students attain at least one dual credit.
"You would not be sitting here today if your school system did not have courage,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “You have passion. When we walk into your schools, we can feel it."

Dual credit courses are taught by high school faculty, adjunct college faculty or college faculty either at the high school, at the college or university, or sometimes through online courses or distance education, according to the Indiana Department of Education.
