INDIANAPOLIS -- March is National Kidney Month, and kidneys are the most needed organ nationally and in the state of Indiana.
More than 1,100 Hoosiers are currently waiting for a kidney transplant - including 3-year-old Henry Whitacre.
"I wouldn't even say it's a burden, it's just our life," said Henry's father, Kevin.
The procedures started for Henry before he was even born.
Henry was diagnosed with a bladder outlet obstruction, but his kidney never fully formed. Doctors performed two surgeries to try to save his kidneys but neither one was successful.
Henry has been on dialysis since the day he was born. His father takes him to Riley four times a week for the treatment, which is more than normal - but because of his age, his nurse says its required for him to keep growing.
But his family is looking forward to the day when those hospital visits will end now that Henry's been medically cleared to get a kidney transplant. A family friend is already going through the proper testing to become Henry's donor.
There's no set time when Henry will receive his transplant but his dad says they hope to get it done soon.
As long as you're healthy you can consider becoming a living kidney donor. Donors do not have to be a relative of their recipient.
