TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. -- Two people are dead after a chain-reaction crash involving multiple semis on I-65 near Lafayette.
Indiana State Police say three semis, a box truck and a car were involved in the crash around 4 p.m. near the SR 25 and SR 26 exits on the southbound side.
Police say the car was stopped behind a flat-bed semi and the box truck was behind the car when a second semi ran into the back of the box truck. The force crushed the car between the box truck and the flatbed semi and pushed the flatbed semi into the semi in front of it.
Police believe the driver of the second semi was distracted and did not see that traffic had stopped in the construction zone.
The driver and passenger of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as Marvin L. Rea, 49, and Kelly Nicole Bradley, 34.
Two other drivers were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
I-65 was closed for almost five hours while crews worked to clean up the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by Indiana State Police.
