INDIANAPOLIS -- People in Las Vegas are answering the call for blood donations in response to Sunday evening's mass shooting but more will be needed as the number of injured is expected to grow as the day continues.

The Indiana Blood Center is urging all eligible donors to make donation appointments as soon as possible in an effort to meet the emergency needs of patients affected by the most recent tragedy.

The Indiana Blood Center has already sent blood to help the victims impacted by the recent hurricanes and often donates during national tragedies.

At least 58 people were killed and more than 500 were wounded when police say a lone gunman opened fire on into a crowd of people attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival at the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the Las Vegas strip.

During a news conference Monday morning, city and state officials said people across the country can help shooting victims by donating blood.

"What we ask for is blood," said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman. "Please donate blood."

Donated blood is often sent from areas across the country during times of crisis and the Indiana Blood Center says they are ready to help if Nevada requests it.

Winter is also when blood banks are hit the hardest, so the Indiana Blood Center will be in need as the weather gets colder in the weeks and months to come.

As always, the blood centers are especially in need of type O blood because it is the only blood type that can be safely used on any patient.

The Blood Center accepts walk-in donors, or you can schedule your appointment online.

No matter where you are in central Indiana, there should be an Indiana Blood Center location nearby.
