INDIANAPOLIS – Camera footage of a phony deliveryman trying to gain entry into a home in Broad Ripple has left neighbors on edge.

The homeowner posted surveillance footage on Nextdoor of a man carrying a package, knocking on a home’s door and checking the door handle. The video also shows the man take the package back to his vehicle and canvassing the house while on his cell phone before noticing a camera was nearby.

A postal slip was not left behind, the homeowner said. Nor were they expecting a package.

"That was during the day when that person happened to do that,” said Carolyn Holder. “I keep my door locked even when I'm inside with the idea that if someone checks my door and it’s not locked and I'm by myself in the house. It creeps me out."

Indianapolis police said if neighbors see someone suspicious, they should call for help.

"We need to be able to work hand-in-hand when those things come up,” said Jim Gillespie with IMPD. “When they observe something suspicious, or they observe criminal activity, give us a call. If you don't want to directly call police, call Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous.”

The Broad Ripple Village Association was notified of the incident and plans to inform the community via email.

Incidents can be reported to (317) 262-TIPS.
