CUMBERLAND — Business owners in the Cumberland community say they aren't giving up and they're teaming up with police and other members of the community to fight back against the recent string of violence.

As part of their initiative, businesses have started being proactive to try and deter would-be robbers from targeting their stores. They're using things like stickers on the front door, that let criminals know they have surveillance cameras and their employees have been trained by police on how to deal with a robbery.

"It's such a serious issue that we immediately got the police involved and local businesses," Jordan Masopust, GM of the Cumberland Dairy Queen said.

Masopust says they contacted police and passed out information to all area business owners, to make sure they were training their staff correctly, and receiving the training if they needed it.

Police say crime in Cumberland is up this year, with 27 armed robberies just in 2018 more than double the 11 that they worked in 2017.

As part of that proactive effort, Masopust says they are also trying to raise money for the police department so they can hire more officers to deal with the increasing crime.

"January 19 we're planning on donating 50 percent of our sales to the local police department," Masopust said.

Masopust hopes that by being proactive and teaming up with police they, as a community, can help fight the crime before it becomes an even bigger issue.
