Camby residents concerned proposed development will change the character of their neighborhood

CAMBY, Ind. -- Some Camby residents are concerned that the area is growing too fast and that a proposed development will change the character of their neighborhoods.

Drew Herb Bazemore said the peace and quiet is what drew him to Camby nearly 30 years ago, but in the last couple of years of years, the view from his porch has changed a lot.

“We all came to this property because there’s nothing behind us,” said Bazemore. “At the time, you could see all the way to 67. There was nothing. Even our kids could stand in the street and play around with their bikes. Then it got changed.”

Bazemore says traffic on Trotter Road has multiplied in the last several years and he’s worried it will get worse with a new development.

Westport Homes has requested to rezone about 45 acres of farmland at Trotter and Camby roads for a new low-to-medium intensity residential development.

“I understand people want to find property and find a house, but this has changed so bad and so quick,” said Bazemore.

Bazemore has been handing out signs to his neighbors, protesting the development and he has formed a neighborhood association that will be meeting for the first time Monday evening.

“To put together a list of our concerns and our complaints that we can provide to the city council,” said Bazemore.

The hearing examiner for the Metropolitan Development Commission is scheduled to review the request to rezone on Sept. 13.

The Decatur Township Civic Council Land Use Committee is expected to make a recommendation to share with the MDC. The head of that group, Pat Andrews, has declined to comment about the proposal.
