INDIANAPOLIS -- The 16-year-old accused of intentionally setting a fire that killed his adopted father had a troubled past, says family.
Jordan Marin-Doan was arrested in connection to a house fire that happened last week in the 7200 block of Highland Road. Jason Doan, 45, was killed in the fire. Jason’s husband, Alan Marin, and their two other adopted children were able to escape the home safely.
Alan said his son Jordan came from a troubled past and he and Jason had been trying to get him help for a while.
“His (birth) dad was arrested in front of him and he thought it was his fault because he did something wrong,” said Alan. “They tried to get him the best possible therapy to help him out. Because he didn't get the service that he needed right away - these are the consequences.”
Following the arrest, Jordan’s birth father still had parental rights until he agreed to allow the adoption.
Alan said just weeks before the fire, he and Jason were trying to get Jordan into a mental health facility, but the waitlist was too long.
“When I opened the doors and I saw the fire, I knew it was him,” said Alan. “I think all the stuff he went through was more than he could handle.”
After escaping the house, Alan realized Jordan was missing along with the family's Jeep.
Jordan was taken into custody in Adams County two days after the fire.
Following his arrest, Jordan reportedly admitted to police that he poured the fuel out in the house and then lit it with a lighter.
Through it all, Alan said he has forgiven Jordan.
“I have forgiven him because Jason was a forgiving person,” he said. “I’m upset about what he did but I don't have any hate towards him because at the end of the day he was my son too.”
Jordan was charged as an adult with murder, arson and auto theft, court records show.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges and his jury trial is scheduled for January.
