Fight video prompts mother to pull daughter out of Arsenal Tech High School

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis mother says she is pulling her daughter out of class and pursuing legal action after a fight at Arsenal Tech High School that was captured on a cell phone and posted to social media.

The video shows Marquita Bright's daughter, Anya, being pushed and kicked. Bright says the fight stemmed from an incident last month when her daughter didn't open the door for a boy who was running late to class, and things escalated from there.

Bright says it isn't the first problem Anya has had during her sophomore year at Arsenal Tech and she doesn't think IPS is doing enough to keep students on campus safe.

Now, she says she has no choice but to pull her daughter out of the school for fear of her safety

"My daughter is a very good student, she's highly intelligent, she loves to go to school, she wants to be an attorney. She has dreams and goals and aspirations. And it's like, why does it have to be shattered by some bad seeds?" asked Bright.

She filled out reports and called the school and the district. Bright says she was told someone would get back to her within 48 hours.

"That's not good enough at all, when my daughter is threatened to be beat. She's small. A beating could lead to her being killed," said Bright.

IPS isn't commenting directly about this case but referred to a statement the district made Friday that IPS is aware of and is investigating multiple fights over a few days at Arsenal Tech.

"Police will continue to have an increased presence on campus until further notice. The safety of our students is always our top priority and violence will absolutely not be tolerated."

Bright says her daughter is okay and is staying with relatives.

She says she's meeting with a lawyer Tuesday to pursue legal action against the district.
