INDIANAPOLIS -- After Harrison College closed without notice on September 16, former students are being targeted by collections agencies while they’re still trying to figure out how to finish their degrees.
Shannon Evans, 22, was pursuing an associates nursing degree and was 12 weeks from completing it when Harrison College shut down, leaving 1,300 students without answers.
She and Jennifer Sherman both received letters from Key 2 Recovery, a collection agency, saying they owed money for their time at Harrison College.
“What could I possibly owe to Harrison?” Evans said.
“I called them and I told them, in fact, I should be sending Harrison to collections for a degree I didn’t receive,” said Sherman. “They hung up on me.”
The Better Business Bureau verified that Key 2 Recovery is a real collection agency, and they offered advice to former Harrison College students who get collections lets from them.
“The first thing they should do is dispute it with the people who are trying to collect the money and also with the college,” said Tim Maniscalo. “You are not rendering the services that I got billed for here. I don’t believe I owe you this money for. Definitely go back and challenge it.”
