INDIANAPOLIS -- Friends of a 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed outside of a Castleton restaurant Saturday night organized a balloon release on Indy’s northeast side in his memory.
Matthew McGee’s friends held the gathering at Gardner Park where family and classmates joined. Stephanie Carpenter, a mother attending the gathering, addressed the youth at the release.
“It needs to stop today. Nobody wants to sit here a week from now doing the same thing. We’re tired of burying our black kids, period," said Carpenter. "We’re tired. Especially ya’ll age. You all are supposed to be burying us. Not us burying you. Matt’s gone. It should be an eye opener for everybody. One minute you’re here and the next minute you’re gone. You all have a promising future – you all are our future.”
McGee was killed in the parking lot of Long John Silver’s near Castleton Mall, and police are still searching for suspects and a motive.
If you have any information about the shooting contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.
