INDIANAPOLIS — Thursday was a long day for local plumbers after Indiana's two-day deep freeze.
"It's been every single call: frozen pipes, frozen pipes," Josh Shahan with Hope Plumbing, said.
A local woman explained how she went to turn on her sink Thursday morning to brush her teeth, but had no such luck.
"Literally the first thing that went through my mind was, did I pay my water bill?" Cindy Morse said. "It's never happened before but maybe I just didn't pay and for some reason the water is off. And then I was like, oh it's freezing, everyone warned me of freezing pipes, maybe my pipes are frozen."
In this case, a lid had not been installed correctly.
""We have a meter pit lid that has not been properly reinstalled," Shahan said. "If someone had once turned the water off to this meter and they left it open, allowing air to pass through and freeze the water line to the house."
Hope Plumbing's job is to seal the lid where the gap was, and try to heat the pipes back up before they burst.
One customer on the other side of town required more investigation.
"I'm checking to see how bad of the system is frozen up," Jonathan Bidart, with Hope Plumbing, said. "If she's getting any water, some water. What parts of the house are getting water and what parts aren't getting water."
Like most cases, this customer has exposed pipes close to the outdoors. These pipes just couldn't handle the cold the night before, prompting the freeze.
"The solution here is to insulate your pipes using either foam or rubber," Bidart said. "Or in this case, using a heat wrap to warm up the water coming in, so it doesn't freeze the lines."
If your water stops running, open your cabinets and expose the pipes. Try to heat them up if possible, then call a plumber before they burst.
