INDIANAPOLIS -- After a homeowner was pistol-whipped and shot in the leg by two masked men as he was coming home Wednesday evening, his wife fired back at the intruders.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to a home in the 3700 block of Graceland Avenue around 9 p.m.
The homeowner told police he was walking into his home when two masked men confronted him at the door and pushed their way inside. The two suspects then pistol-whipped the homeowner and shot him in the leg.
Police say the homeowner's wife and children were inside the home at the time and the man's wife fired back at the intruders.
"It was very scary and devastating," neighbor Dana Miller told RTV6. "I heard the shots and then I saw the paramedics and everything and I ran down and I saw the blood on my neighbor's floor and I just lost it."
The suspects then fled the scene with an unknown amount of money. It is unclear if either of them was hit by the wife's bullet.
The two suspects fled the scene and police are still searching for any witnesses who may know their whereabouts. Anyone with information should contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
Police say if you ever find yourself in a similar situation the first thing you want to do is get out of your home.
"If you have an escape that you can completely get out of the house and get to a neighbor, calling 911 as you're running through your yard," police say.
If you can't escape or hide and you keep a legal firearm in your harm, try to defend yourself.
"For whatever reason, somebody gets in and confronts you before you can activate your plan - don't do anything that's going to jeopardize your life," police say. "Most people are there for property and there's no amount of property intheh world that is worth getting hurt or losing your life over."
