INDIANAPOLIS -- A new report suggests that Hoosiers have a terrible quality of life - in fact, it's one of the worst in the country.

U.S. News & World Report ranks Indiana 48 in quality of life, the only two states that rank worse are New Jersey and California.

The report ranks states based on a healthy environment and a sense of community. It takes into account things like a state's urban air quality, pollution and voter participation.

The report says that “a person’s quality of life is largely a result of their interactions with those around them,” according to U.S. News. “Studies show that when people feel socially supported, they experience greater happiness, as well as physical and mental health.”

The report cites a high pollution risk, toxic pollution rates, a lack of social support and low voter participation as some of the main reasons for the ranking.

The states with the best quality of life were North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and South Dakota.
