INDIANAPOLIS — It's a crime we should all be thinking about this time of year - it's tax season - W2's are landing in the mailboxes and it's chock full of information crooks wants.

"Don’t put anything in your mailbox," a Decatur Township woman, who wishes to be unnamed, said. For the sake of this article she will be named *Debbie.

Debbie had her mail stolen last week.

"Truck driving down the road, stopping in front of a mailbox, reaching in and grabbing the mail and putting the flag down and take it off," she said.

Debbie says she was sending a check to pay some bills. Luckily the thieves were caught on her surveillance system.

"Everything we had to go through to fix this has been inconvenient, costly and timely," Debbie said.

Jeffrey Duncan, Debbie's neighbor, is helping share the video of the crooks on social media, in hopes they'll be caught.

"These are nice old people that live across the street from us and don’t deserve to be treated that way. That’s just not right," Duncan said.

Debbie filed a police report but IMPD says they took the report as a courtesy because this is a federal crime that they don't investigate. IMPD told RTV6 that they passed it on to the proper agency, but after talking to a postal inspection spokesman - they still didn't know.

"It’s been two days and it’s not even to the right person yet. "Who knows how many other mailboxes they could have hit by now," Debbie said.

The Postal inspector Service builds cases by linking multiple complaints and want people to report any mail theft that occurs.

"I’ve got the picture and the truck out there, and somebody’s gonna recognize them. They’re gonna be caught," Debbie said.

The postal service wants people to sign up for informed delivery, which can easily be done online. Those who sign up for informed delivery get a digital snapshot of mail that's on its way to your house. So if anything is stolen, you'll know what's missing. There is also an app to track mail when you're out of town.

To report mail theft, go to the postal inspectors website.
