INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Blood Center is urging all eligible donors to make donation appointments as soon as possible in an effort to meet the emergency needs of patients affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The Indiana Blood Center has been sending blood to Texas as part of a national response team for Hurricane Harvey.

“Indiana Blood Center got the call, and we were able to immediately respond with about 50 units to a hospital there in South Texas,” said Andrea Fagan with the Indiana Blood Center. “We’ve provided almost 600 units to the national assistance.”

The blood centers are especially in need of type O blood because it is the only blood type that can be safely used on any patient.

The Indiana Blood Center is urging Hoosiers to donate as blood drives in Texas have been canceled and the blood banks cannot collect donations because of the continued flooding and storms across the region.

Donating blood is one of many ways that Hoosiers can help those affected by Harvey's devastation.

“It feels pretty good to be able to help, but we do that only because people in Indiana are so willing to donate and to support that mission,” said Fagan. “So we are asking people as they’re thinking about ways to help those hurricane victims, this is an amazing thing that they can do. Truly life-saving.”

The Blood Center accepts walk-in donors, or you can schedule your appointment online.

No matter where you are in central Indiana, there should be an Indiana Blood Center location nearby.
