INDIANAPOLIS -- Schools in Indiana can now apply to get free metal detectors through a program launched by Governor Eric Holcomb on Monday.

As part of the program, the state will provide one handheld metal detector for every 250 students in a school corporation, at no cost to the district.

"Unfortunately we're living in a time when every school must prepare to respond to someone who might try to hurt themselves or others on school grounds," Holcomb said. "That's exactly why our efforts to assist our local schools are evolving as well."

School districts can apply for the metal detectors at any time, but in order to receive the new equipment by mid-August, they must apply by July 19.
