INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Task Force 1 members rescued more than 100 people Saturday night from New Hanover County, North Carolina.
Members worked with other agencies for hours through the night rescuing families and their pets from a “very grave situation.”
“It was one of the scariest sits I have seen in my 35 years in public safety,” Captain Mike Pruitt, who is working with Indiana Task Force 1, said in a press release.
New Hanover County has had high flood water levels since Florence made landfall on Friday.

Pruitt says members were able to take a shower and eat a prepared meal for the first time in five days on Sunday morning.
“Hoosiers should be extremely proud of this team as they approached the flooding with great professionalism and skill as they went back into the flooded neighborhoods time after time pulling the elderly, children, parents, dogs and cats from a very grave situation,” Pruitt said.

It’s 7:00 am and our team has been going for 24 hours. Absolutely one of the most challenging nights our team has ever experienced. There won’t be much down time. The rain is still falling. #hurricaneflorence pic.twitter.com/rBWJlQWkhV
