CLARKSVILLE, Ind. -- Officials in a southern Indiana town have had to take action to control an out-of-control geese population they say is plaguing their town and costing them thousands of dollars.
The city of Clarksville applied for and was approved by DNR for a permit to hire Rusty's Animal Control to euthanize over 200 geese.
The town manager told News and Tribune that the geese were causing erosion from overgrazing as well as severe sanitary problems. Clean-up for goose poop has also cost the town several thousand dollars.
The town's contract with Rusty's includes an annual roundup of geese between June 3 and July 3 and up to three extra visits if they get out of hand.
Between 200 and 250 geese were caught using traps earlier this year and euthanized using carbon dioxide or cervical dislocation. Their carcasses were then incinerated.
The town manager said several geese have already replaced the ones that were killed.
