INDIANAPOLIS -- It’s another ranking you don’t want to be on the top of – Indianapolis was once again ranked one of the most dangerous cities in the nation by 24/7 Wall St.
That’s one ranking higher than last year when Indy was 13th most dangerous.
According to the study, 2016 FBI crime data ranks Indianapolis 12th out of all major cities for violent crime with over three times as many violent crimes reported than other cities nationally.
The ranking also takes property crimes into consideration, Indianapolis had more than 1,150 burglaries per 100,000 residents in 2016 – that’s 2.5 times the national burglary rate.
The city’s rates for robberies, aggravated assaults, rapes and murders were all well above the national average in 2015 – and those numbers don’t seem to be going down.
Indianapolis hit 100 criminal homicides just last week, and there have been at least three more since then.

24/7 Wall St. identified three major factors contributing to the increase in violent crimes in American cities.
- Poor Relationship Between Police And The Community: If people don’t trust the police and won’t come forward as a witness to a crime, there is only one direction for crime to go, up.
- Weak Economy: Cities with high crime rates and weak economies often struggle
- Declining Population: In 11 of the 25 cities on the list, the population declined from 2015 to 2016
