INDIANAPOLIS -- Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department took part in a walk Saturday morning aimed at uniting people and keeping the peace around the city.
The IMPD Northwest District and United Northwest Area Churches joined together to walk the streets of the northwest side.
Their route took them past four places where people had been violently murdered. At each location, the group stopped to pray.
Officers say the people carrying out these acts of violence don't just turn to a life of crime overnight.
"There are things that lead up to that. Maybe education issues, maybe job issues, or they just can't pay their bills and so on. These churches all offer services, different things. If we can get the churches together, and talk to people about what they're offering, maybe that will go a long way reducing our violent crimes and fatal shootings," said Cmdr. Michael Jefferson, IMPD Northwest District.
The group also passed out fliers with contact information for law enforcement and local churches.
