INDIANAPOLIS -- Residents of the Mars Hill community on Indianapolis' southwest side have long coped with flooded streets following heavy rains - but change is on the way.
Poor drainage is the reason the Department of Public Works is using a rate adjustment to storm water fees, which is collected separately on property tax bills, to fund improvements.
In many neighborhoods, new pipes and drains are being installed to carry storm water away and ease flooding.
To best determine which areas need the most help, the city wants residents to complete a storm water survey.
City-County Council member Jared Evans and volunteers will walk the streets of Mars Hill, handing out survey instructions on Oct. 21.
Evans is calling it a “day of community action,” and he needs help.
He’s asking for volunteers to meet him at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of Stout Field Elementary School and spend up to 2 hours going door-to-door.
The survey can be completed online or over the phone.
Evans says this is a chance for the people of Mars Hill to make their voices heard as the city makes decisions on which neighborhoods get improved drainage.
