Indy doctor killed during burglary awarded Sagamore of the Wabash

INDIANAPOLIS -- One of the state's highest honors was bestowed on an Indianapolis doctor who was murdered in his home during a break-in last November. 

The Sagamore of the Wabash was presented to the family of Dr. Kevin Rodgers during the opening ceremonies for the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine at the JW Marriott on Thursday. 

Dr. Rodgers was a doctor and educator who served until his death as Director Emeritus of the IU School of Medicine's Emergency Medicine Program.

His wife called the honor "bittersweet."

"We are a little overwhelmed and humbled by this award," said Ruth Rodgers. "I know the meaning of being aSagamoree and he would have been tremendously humbled. We are tremendously honored to receive it, and as you say, it's bittersweet. "

Dr. Rodgers was also a recipient of an Excellence in Education award, the highest honor SAEM awards each year to teachers in emergency medicine.
