Indy drivers say school zone sign won't stop blinking

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Drivers say a “school zone” light in an Indy neighborhood, that issues speed restrictions during school hours never goes out.

The blinking lights are meant to alert drivers that they’re in an active school zone.

“I think those school zone signs are a great idea,” said Terry Halloran. “They let people know when we need to slow down and stuff to watch out for kids and parents stopping to pick them up.”

But the problem with the light on 21st Street near Emerson Avenue is that it never shuts off, even hours after school is clearly out of session.

“It’s pretty annoying and it needs to be fixed,” said Halloran. “People that drive by it all the time probably don’t even pay attention to it anymore just from the exposure effect.”

After several concerned drivers reached out to RTV6, we contacted the Department of Public Works to find out who controls those signs in the city.

A spokesperson for DPW says the signal pre-dates many of the other school zone signs around town, which can all be updated by a computer.

A spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says the school zone hours are in effect between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., which is when their school zone enforcement runs – so you probably won’t get a ticket if you’re driving through the area at night.

But drivers in the area say they still want to see it fixed, to keep traffic moving after school hours and make sure drivers aren’t desensitized to the meaning of the important signal.

“I think having it on all the time definitely impedes traffic and keeps people going slower at times when we could keep it moving along a little bit faster,” said Halloran.

DPW says the funding to replace the signal with one that can be updated remotely has not yet been allocated.

They say changing the timing of the light on 21st Street requires someone to come out and do it manually and the traffic operations team will be checking it out at some point.
