INDIANAPOLIS -- The Trump administration has awarded the City of Indianapolis $1 million to fight gun violence and most of that money is going to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

IMPD Deputy Chief Chris Bailey says they will be getting $800,000, which they plan to use to hire three crime analysts to help sniff out leads before crime happens.

“The piece that we are missing here in Indianapolis was the crime analyst,” said Bailey. “What this CJ grant allows us to do, it allows us to hire professional crime analysts.”

IMPD already has a system that’s capable of processing shell casings from guns at crime scenes and cross-checking them to see If they were used in another shooting, but what they’re lacking are the resources – and manpower – to do so.

“We are going to be looking for people with master’s degrees that this is what they do,” said Bailey. “That’s the goal of all this… to find the people, to find the shooters and get them off the streets to keep our communities safe.”

Bailey says hiring three specific people to track that data and link shootings together will help them to get those guns and the people who are using them, of the streets.

Another focus for those analysts will be on social media, tracking what criminals are sharing and talking about online.

The other $250,000 from the grant will go to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to handle all of the gun violence cases.
