Inflammatory breast cancer may not show up in routine mammograms

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis woman went from wondering if she was allergic to her laundry detergent, to being diagnosed with cancer within a two week period.

Beth Porreca said she developed a rash on her right breast in 2015 and thought a product in her skincare routine was the cause. Soon after she kept pressing doctors for answers, she learned she had Stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer.

Her oncologist at St. Vincent Hospital said the type of cancer often doesn’t show up on mammograms.

“He explained to me, it's not the type you want. It's not the diagnosis he wanted to be giving me,” said Porreca.
