INDIANAPOLIS — Are you prepared? Central Indiana is in for some serious, even dangerous, cold this week. The combination of already frigid temperatures with breezy conditions sets us up for wind chills we haven't experienced since 2014.
The core of the coldest air dives into the Hoosier State Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. A Wind Chill Warning goes into effect for most of us late Tuesday and lasts through Thursday afternoon.
So just how cold is it going to feel? The map below shows the wind chill forecast for Wednesday morning. That's when feels like numbers should hit rock bottom, ranging from -20° to possibly colder than -40°.
Wind chills of these levels have to be taken seriously. Frostbite can happen in less than 30 minutes. Where those wind chills approach -40 to -50°, frostbite can occur in less than 10 minutes. That's why it's so important to limit your time outdoors. If you do have to go outside, cover up to limit any exposed skin as much as possible!
We continue with dangerously cold conditions throughout the day on Wednesday. Even into the afternoon, wind chills will be well below zero.
Feels like numbers don't get much better Thursday morning. Areas near and north of I-70 start the day still feeling like it's 15 to 30° below zero.
While it's no heat wave, wind chills recover into the single digits by Thursday afternoon. We'll be able to put this cold behind us and thaw out Friday and beyond, as temperatures climb through the 30s and near 50 degrees by Sunday afternoon.
