INDIANAPOLIS – An IUPUI student was struck and killed by a school bus Monday afternoon.

Officials with IUPUI said the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of University Boulevard and New York when the student, who had the right of way, was hit by the bus attempting to make a left-hand turn.

The student was taken to Eskenazi Health and died as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. She was later identified as 18-year-old Fatima Hassuneh.

School officials said the bus was under contract with Indianapolis Public Schools, but owned by Durham Transportation.

"It's a loss of a family member, we're all touched by it. It's a sad day," an IUPD officer said.

The incident remains under investigation by Indianapolis police.
