INDIANAPOLIS -- The ex-girlfriend of the man accused of killing another man inside an Indianapolis Kroger says he was abusive and had a short temper.

Jason Cooper has been preliminarily charged with murder after police say he shot and killed a man in the dairy aisle at the Kroger on S. East Street Friday evening.

Jessica Doyle says she recently ended her relationship with Cooper because his drug use was getting out of hand.

Doyle said Cooper had been increasingly abusive, so she left him to protect their child.

“He had anger issues – he had jealousy issues,” said Doyle.

The two have one child together and Doyle says she is pregnant with their second.

Doyle said Cooper would steal to make money, taking things to sell out of people’s yards and eventually, he became controlling.

“He wouldn’t even let me around my own family,” said Doyle.

Doyle said when she split with Cooper he got even worse, stalking her parents' house in the middle of the night.

“He started stalking my mom’s house and coming around knocking on windows in the middle of the night,” said Doyle “It was getting to the point where I didn’t feel safe where I was staying and my family didn’t either.”

And Friday night, before he allegedly killed a man in the Kroger store, Doyle said her parents had sent him away from their home.

“He definitely looked like he was high and didn't look like he was high on marijuana,” said Doyle.

Later that night, police say Cooper shot and killed a man and then carjacked a woman outside of Kroger before leading police on a short pursuit. The victim was later identified a Carlos Castro, 43. The Marion County Coroner said it wasn't clear whether he died of the shooting or a stabbing.

“I was terrified completely when I first found out it was him,” said Doyle. “We started shutting all the windows. We weren’t sure if he was in jail or not.”

While she’s glad he’s finally behind bars, Doyle said she’s worried about the future and having to tell her children about their father.

“The day they decide they want to come to me and ask about him I would tell them the truth they deserve to know what kind of father they have,” said Doyle.
