Lawrence Township mother getting answers about crowded school bus after RTV6 steps up to help

Posted

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Ind. -- Just one day after a frustrated Lawrence Township mother reached out to RTV6 for help with her daughter's crowded school bus, that mother says the district is stepping up to solve the problem.

Autumn Summers told RTV6 Thursday that her 7th-grade daughter was forced to squat next to an emergency exit on her school bus on several occasions because it was so overcrowded that there weren’t enough seats for all of the students.

Summers said when she first contacted the school district, they didn’t seem to share her concerns for her daughter’s safety.

“I was reassured that the door would not open, so it was okay,” Summers said.

Summers said Thursday her daughter was finally able to sit on a seat, but another student was forced to sit on the floor, which is not what she wanted to happen.

RTV6's Nicole Griffin also reached out to the district and shortly after hearing from us, Summers says she got a call from the Transportation Director saying the problem would be resolved within 24 hours.

Summers says Friday morning the Transportation Director reached back out to her and said he was changing the bus route to accommodate the seating issue and 14 children would be moved to a different bus.

Those changes are expected to start Monday, September 10.

RTV6 will continue to track this story and bring you more information when the situation is resolved.
