INDIANAPOLIS — With the frigid temperature we’ve had the past couple of days, many of us find ourselves staying inside of our warm, cozy homes.
For those without a home, that’s not always an option.
A local non-profit works to serve the homeless, to help ease the pain of facing the brutal cold out in the elements.
"I've been homeless since I was 8," Aaron Birdweir said.
Birdweir said being out in the below-freezing temperatures can be brutal, but for him, Saturday’s been a good day.
That’s because Woman2Woman, a local non-profit organization serving the less fortunate, is taking action.
"It makes us feel good that somebody cares, because a lot of people don't," said Birdweir.
“We do have individuals ask us for prayer, and we offer that as well, as well as encouraging word," Janna Montgomery, an Evangelist for Woman2Woman said. Just let them know that even though these circumstances have brought them out here that they’re not alone."
Montgomery, along with Founder Rachel Sanders and Minister Tammy Snipes, said they’ve been doing this for several years and their organization has grown.
At Saturday’s walk, roughly 15 members came to help with distribution.
The group spent their morning distributing blankets, hats, gloves, and hand and toe warmers to those who need it the most, and shared moments in prayer, hoping to express to those they're serving, that they aren't forgotten.
Though Indianapolis has seen a decline, according to the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention & Prevention, 1,700 people are homeless on any given night.
"There's a lot of homelessness here, but every little bit helps,” said Snipes.
“Anything you can do for the homeless outreach, just donate anything you can,” Birdweir said.
“We just hope to make an impact for the city of Indianapolis," Montgomery said. "That we are helping people in need and that other people will be willing to join us in our mission."
