INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was killed after his car crashed into a fire hydrant Wednesday afternoon in Wayne Township.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. near the 200 block of Country Club Road.

According to the Wayne Township Fire Department, the car clipped a fire hydrant and struck a tree head on. 

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say the 53-year-old driver was taken to Eskenazi hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The man's name has not been released.

Firefighters say they don't know whether the driver had a medical emergency or died from trauma suffered in the accident.
