INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Animal Care and Control asked for help with overcrowding and the public responded. During the month of September over 500 cats and dogs found their forever homes, which may tie or break the previous record for most adoptions in a single month.
On top of adoptions, almost 400 animals are now in foster homes – both situations helping to alleviate the overcrowding issue at the Indianapolis shelter.
The overcrowding started in August when IACS took in 1,502 animals. The shelter took in another 1,288 animals in September.
A sign posted to the shelter’s intake door on September 7 that urged owners to rethink surrendering their pets because of overcrowding and the possibility of euthanasia spurred a large response from the community and local rescue organizations.

“Due to the support and generosity from many of Indianapolis residents and organizations, IACS was able to take down the sign earlier than expected in the last week of September,” said IACS deputy director Katie Trennepohl. “The Indy community rallied and did what it does best — it came together and lent a hand when IACS was in need. The shelter is now operating at a capacity that is more ideal and, furthermore, healthier for our furry friends as well as safer for our staff and volunteers. To everyone that either adopted, fostered or simply shared our story, you have our [IACS] deepest gratitude.”
On top of the adoption successes in the past month, construction of additional indoor kennel space in the shelter is almost complete, which will help improve the quality of life for felines at IACS.
