INDIANAPOLIS -- As gun violence continues to plague the city of Indianapolis and the number of youths dying continues to grow, families are left with the unexpected and heartbreaking need to bury their loved ones.

But one Indianapolis mother - who knows that heartbreak first hand - is working to help other families alleviate the stress of burying their children.

"It's hard and I know there can be single mothers out there that cannot bury their children and so we just want to help, a blessing to somebody," said Shameckia Lyle.

"It's a lot of money. It's a lot of money just to come up with when you're trying to get your loved one buried within the next couple of days maybe the week it's hard," said Lyle.

Lyle lost her 19-year-old son, Dazjuan, to gun violence in 2016. She says she was able to bury her child because she had life insurance, but she knows other mothers aren't so lucky.

The average funeral costs $7,000.

That's why Lyle started "A Mother's Love." Her organization helps to alleviate some of the monetary burdens that families carry when they unexpectedly lose a child to gun violence.

"Burial expenses, they don't have something to wear, we help them do that. We even want to look into if their child. You want your baby to have a headstone or something. We want to help with that also," said Lyle.

The organization is holding a fundraiser this weekend.
