MUNCIE, Ind. -- A proposed pig farm in Muncie that would house nearly 10,000 pigs has people who live near where it would be built concerned for their health and the value of their property.
The wean-to-finish pig production facility would consist of four large buildings that would house more than 2,500 pigs each on W. County Road 1270-North, just north of Muncie.
But people living in that area are pushing Delaware County Commissioners to re-zone their land to stop the farm from being built so close to their homes.
“It’s foolish,” said Jennie Irving. “It’s just foolish to allow this to come into our county on this sort of scale.”
It’s not just the smell, people living close to the area where the farm would be built are also worried about what impact it will have on their land, their property values and their health.
Elizabeth Driscoll and her family just moved into a home less than a mile from where the farm would be built.
“I have two little girls and the more I read about the health concerns, it’s devastating,” said Driscoll. “I’m fighting for my life. I’m fighting for my finances and I’m fighting for my kids.”
The county commissioners are holding a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds to share more information on the proposed farm and to hear public comment.
