INDIANAPOLIS -- The Broad Ripple Bark Park won a $15,000 grant from the Beneful last November and members of the park thought it would go to make improvements – but almost a year later, they’re wondering what’s taking so long.
The Indianapolis dog park was one of the finalists in the “Beneful Dream Dog Park promotion” last year. Although it didn’t win the grand prize, Purina donated $15,000 to the park to go towards improvements because of the enthusiasm and energy they saw from the dog-loving community during the competition.
Linda Broadfoot, director of Indianapolis’ Parks and Recreation Department, says those funds are actually being used to install agility equipment.

“It gives them another opportunity to play, to exercise in the park,’ said Broadfoot. “It should look really cool when it goes in.”

Broadfoot said it took time to get the equipment ordered and they are hoping to have ready to install sometime next week.
"Whenever we get grant money we take the confines of the grant very, very seriously," said Broadfoot. "It just took a minute to get it ordered and get it in."
Corinna Mayer is a frequent visitor to the Broad Ripple Bark Park and says it has been a life-changer for her and her dog, Beauty.
Since joining the park Mayer said she’s seen significant changes in Beauty’s behavior, but she’d also like to see improvements to the two-acres she plays on.
“There is still quite a bit of debris that needs to be removed,” said Mayer. “I think they need to grow some more grass, they need to install new waste disposal centers.”
Broadfoot says the city is hopeful that more changes will also be coming to the park, but those improvements could take some time.
“A lot of people use it, a lot of people love it and it shows sometimes,” said Broadfoot. “So we are hopeful about doing some additional improvements, but those are forthcoming.”
