IRVINGTON, Ind. -- People living in one Irvington neighborhood say giant mud holes and flooded streets are common every time it rains, sometimes so bad that it's difficult for many of them to even get to their homes after a storm.
The high water isn’t the only issue though. Brian Hawver says the standing water has become a breeding ground for mosquitos and algae.
Hawver, who lives on Burgess Avenue off Ritter Road, says it’s not just frustrating, it's also a health concern. Especially for one of his sons, who is allergic to mosquitos.

“It really is kind of a health and safety issue,” said Hawver. “He gets bit, and they swell up so big, and this is more or less a mosquito breeding ground. It’s almost ridiculous.”
Hawver and other neighbors say they’ve complained to the city numerous times, contacted the Mayor’s Action Center and even their local City-County Council members and Citizen’s Energy – but nothing has been done.
“Up to, I think, two years when I first started to try to bring this to the attention of my city council member,” said Hawver.
The Department of Public Works tells RTV6 they are exploring options involving street maintenance, stormwater management or installing drainage systems but they have yet to come up with a recommendation for the issues.
If you’re dealing with flooding issues in your neighborhood, you can file a complaint by calling the Citizen’s Energy Group Hotline at 317-924-3311. They will inspect the issue, and either schedule work to be completed or send it to the DPW for review.
