CENTER TOWNSHIP, Ind. – Construction has begun to improve bike lanes on two busy streets on Indianapolis’ near east side.
The improved bike lanes on New York Street and Michigan Street will have planters or a curb that will separate the bike lanes from traffic.
New York Street will also have some separation from College to Rural that includes beautiful planters from the railroad tracks to Highland Avenue and then again from State Street to Hamilton Avenue. Other areas will have a curb separating the lane from traffic.
Mayor Hogsett’s office said they hope to extend the separated bike lane all the way to the Pleasant Run Trail in the future, although that will take “budget money and neighborhood buy-in.” Until then, the current bike lanes will remain in place.
On Michigan Street, the bike lanes will be separated from traffic with planters from State Street all the way to the railroad tracks before the I-65/I-70 overpass that will change to a curb from the railroad tracks to College Avenue.
In addition to the improvements to the existing bike lanes a new bike lane will be added northbound on Arsenal Avenue to connect with Michigan Street.
All the construction should be wrapped up by November with trees being planted in the planter is the spring of next year.
