INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis is preparing for its latest installation of new streetlights in another part of the city this week.
The city has teamed up with IPL for the ongoing project.
If you're like Alex Bosley, you're still getting used to it turning dark earlier.
'It's like 6 o'clock and it's like 'Wow it's dark outside,'" Bosley said.
A stretch of W. 38th Street is now brighter after IPL crews converted the city's old streetlights earlier this year.
"It was a pretty dark area before," Bosley said. "Before they change the lights. And the LED lights like these are definitely brighter than the lights they used to use on the street."
This week, IPL is installing 24 new LED lights on the city's northeast side, along Shadeland Avenue between 75th and 82nd streets. They will be the first of up to 4,000 new streetlights to be installed throughout the city through 2025.
They aren't on yet, but Danielle Costley said the installation will be a welcome change.
"We have a lot of walkers," Costley said. "There's a bus stop right here. So this is super busy, and if somebody's walking to the bus stop I mean who knows if I'm gonna see them.
The streetlights are paid for by the city thanks to the money saved by converting the older streetlights to LED. The LED lights have a longer lifespan -- needing far less maintenance than traditional lights. They also use less energy -- cutting the city's costs.
"I think it's a great thing, especially due to the fact that all the accidents that we're having lately, people walking a dog in streets and driveways just not really being able to see pedestrians walking," Bosley said.
