INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man's dog was attacked by another dog Sunday while running on the Monon Trail.
The attack happened Sunday morning, between the Kessler Bridge and 61st Street.
Greg Humrichouser was out on an early morning run with his dog Pre when a black pit bull with no tags attacked. It bit Pre in the attack, he said.
"He just beelined, went right for the neck," Humrichouser said.
Humrichouser tackled the dog until it let go of Pre, he said. Another cyclist showed up, called 911, and sprayed the pitbull with mace.
Animal Control says the dog got loose from the person keeping it while the owner was out of town. Animal Control gave the keeper a citation for having an animal at large.
Now that Pre is recovering, his owner has a warning for everyone out on the trails.
"Protect yourself," he said. "Take precautions."
Humrichouser said he told animal control the dog needs to be put down.
"If we're not safe running on the Monon Trail, where are we safe?" he asked.
Humrichouser said he'll be carrying mace with him every time he goes on a run. And it'll be awhile before Pre can come along again.
