LAWRENCE, Ind. -- Residents living in the area around Oaklandon and Geist have been put on coyote alert.

A high volume of postings have surfaced on social media apps like Nextdoor from people in that area that are concerned about coyotes roaming in their neighborhoods.

Most of those concerns focused on what they should do to protect to their pets from the coyotes.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has some answers:

Among the prevention techniques:

  • Feed your pets indoors when possible.
  • Eliminate water bowls and other artificial water sources.
  • Do not discard edible garbage where coyotes can get to it.
  • Keep your shrubbery and bushes near ground level so coyotes can’t hide behind them.
  • If you see coyotes around your home, discourage them by shouting and making loud noises, or spray them with a hose, but NEVER corner a coyote and always give them a free escape route.
