One out of every 145 Indiana drivers will likely hit a deer

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- As we dive into deer-season and deer mating season across the country, the likelihood that drivers anywhere will hit a deer jumps significantly, but in Indiana, it's already expected that out of every 145 drivers at least one of them will hit a deer at some point in their lives.

That statistic is getting better according to State Farm, but still, offers a significant chance that you or a loved one will collide with a deer sometime during the year. Last year, one out of every 136 Indiana drivers were expected to hit a deer.

In Michigan, that chance nearly doubles to one out of every 85 drivers and in West Virginia, your chances of hitting a deer are one out of 43.

The average cost for deer-vehicle claims has also gone up nationwide to $4,179 from $3,995.

During and around deer season and deer mating season, between the months of October and December, your chances of hitting a deer more than doubles.

State Farm offers the following tips to keep drivers safe during these peak months:

  • Slow down, particularly at dusk and dawn
  • If you see one deer, be prepared for more deer to cross the road
  • Pay attention to deer crossing signs
  • Always buckle up, every trip, every time
  • Use your high beams to see farther, except when there is oncoming traffic
  • Brake if you can, but avoid swerving, which could result in a more severe crash
  • Remain focused on the road, scanning for hazards, including animals
  • Avoid distractions, like devices or eating, which might cause you to miss seeing an animal
  • Do not rely on products such as deer whistles, which are not proven effective
  • If riding a motorcycle, always wear protective gear and keep focus on the road ahead
