INDIANAPOLIS -- A man is dead after police say he was shot in the street on Indianapolis' northeast side Friday afternoon. 

Officers were on a routine patrol around 3:30 p.m. when they heard gunshots. After canvassing the area they found a man lying in the street in the 3700 block of North Baltimore Avenue who appeared to have been shot. That man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

He was identified as Billy Hawkins, 35.

Police canvassed the area for witnesses to the crime but have not made any arrests at this time. 

The shooting remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
