INDIANAPOLIS — For Amy Becker, using a computer was a major part of her job. Just five years ago, however, she fell, broke her back and became quadriplegic.

"Besides being paralyzed from the chest down, my hands don't have any strength and they don't move so it makes it really hard to do a lot of thing," Becker said.

Becker has worked hard through rehabilitation and through the efforts of local rehabilitation group Easterseals Crossroads is using assistive technology that helps her in her everyday life.

"When my hands don't work it's just really hard to use a computer so they have voice recognition and just other adaptive things that help me navigate the community efficiently," Becker said.

Through the group's INDATA project, people like Becker can have special equipment delivered to their home.

"We provide different types of tools to help people be more independent at home, work and at school," Brian Norton, of Easterseals Crossroads, said.

The group has everything from computer technology to mobile ramps — more than 2,500 devices people with debilitating conditions can borrow.

"You can borrow it for 30 days free of charge so you can get some experience with it and really figure out if it really does what you think it should do," Norton said.

Employees bring the devices and provide training on how to use them.

"It just opens up a whole new world and can get you back to doing the things that you did before," Becker said
