INDIANAPOLIS -- Ready or not winter is coming which means so is the snow, and with the first accumulating snowfall expected this weekend, the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works wants you to know they’re prepared.
INDOT crews will be out pre-treating and monitoring the roads ahead of this weekend's snow potential. DPW will have 80 drivers late Friday night through Saturday.
While we probably won’t be buried in white quite yet, the National Weather Service is predicting between 1-3 inches of snow between Friday night and Saturday morning. That's not quite enough to cancel all your plans for, but it's certainly enough to cause some issues on the roads. And when you mix in the chilling temperatures, well, you're going to miss last weekend's warmth.

The following tips are recommended by INDOT during wintry conditions:
Know before you go:
- Learn about current and forecasted weather, as well as roadway conditions before driving. Plan ahead. INDOT offers many resources at winter.indot.in.gov to help drivers be prepared.
Reduce speeds:
- Nobody should be driving summer interstate speeds in winter weather. Ice is possible any time temperatures are below freezing. Be cautious even when temperatures are shown to be near 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Keep a safe distance:
- Make sure your vehicle is following a safe distance to stop. Do not tailgate, especially around snow plows.
Pay attention.
- Avoid all distractions and focus only on the task of driving safely. Be defensive and alert for those who are not driving safely.
