WASHINGTON -- Indiana U.S. Representative Luke Messer (IN-06) said that if President Donald Trump's meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong-Un leads to disarmament, the president would be well on his way to a Nobel Peace Prize.

Rep. Messer issued the statement in reaction to the upcoming meeting between President Trump and the Supreme Leader of North Korea that was announced Thursday night as a historic step in diplomacy between the two countries.

“If North Korea talks lead to concrete action, President Trump should be well on his way to his own Nobel Peace Prize,” Messer said in a statement Thursday.

“(Thursday's) unprecedented announcement shows President Trump’s peace through strength strategy is working,” Messer said. “North Korea is signaling for the first time a willingness to discuss disarming its nuclear capabilities. I applaud the President and I’m hopeful this can lead to peace.”

Messer worked with the Trump administration on implementing some of the harshest sanctions ever on North Korea.

The announcement came as a surprise following months of name-calling and outright threats between the two leaders.
